October 7, 2019

Happy October!

When we meet the needs of a child it is important to meet the needs of the WHOLE child.  As we move forward with MTSS and out SSP process it is important that we are not only addressing the academic needs of our students; we need to be addressing the Social Emotional Learning needs of out Stars too. At this time of the year, every Star should have been introduced to the Zones of Regulation and Big Problem Little Problem.  We also should have begun the Second Step Lessons that are in your classrooms.  Second Step is a Tier One support for every Star on campus.  Please coordinate with your grade-level partners to ensure that you are on the same page/lesson.   If you have not begun your Second Step Lessons or reviewed the Zones please get started.  If you need support on how to begin please reach out to me.

With this in mind, there is a unique opportunity for us to attend a PD session on Trauma-Informed Care:
PD Option on October 31st- Martha Merchant

In anticipation of an incredible PD day on October 31, 2019, I (Meghan) am inviting you to consider a training option that will focus your team on strategies for children who currently face trauma and need our help.

The district teams will all begin the day at Destiny Church, with a keynote from Dr. Martha Merchant, PsyD. a skilled presenter who brings together clinical expertise and research-based, trauma-informed practices to groups working with children. She will be setting the tone for our day with an inspirational talk to EVERYONE in the district that really focuses on how we can reach children in a deeper way.

After the keynote, most staff will head to Eich and into multiple sessions with the MTSS lens. However, the lucky school teams that are interested in spending the remainder of the day working directly with Doc Martha, will continue their day of learning with Martha! Here is what to expect...

School site teams, consisting of multiple staff members who are willing to engage in the learning and sharing of knowledge back at individual sites will:

Learn ways to positively support staff’s knowledge and implementation of:
-Trauma-informed practices
-Ways to increase in instructional time
-Ways to decrease in disciplinary office referrals, student physical aggression, and suspension

So if you are looking to promote school success and resilience for trauma-impacted students by creating a safer, supportive, and engaging learning and teaching environment, this is an opportunity for growth for your staff and for your team as a whole.

Please let me know if you are interested in this option and are committed to sending a team in order to create a significant impact on your site. Seats are limited and we will honor your requests on a first come first serve basis. Please let me know by October 7 at the end of PLC.

Remember this will be a priority reservation for your team, and only available to your team if you reserve seats now!

This promises to be an impactful training, and life-changing for the students you serve and for your staff!

Please discuss this option with your grade level and let me know if you are interested. I will also be discussing this option with the PBIS team.

- Kirsten

The first SSC meeting is Monday, October 7, 2019, at 4:00 pm.

FYI

Mark your calendars...October 9, 2019, from 6:30-7:30 we will be having our annual “Dads and Kids” Pizza Night at our school. You will meet here at the school cafeteria at 6:30 for FREE pizza and drinks.  At 7:00 we will have a presentation about our WACTCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) Program. WATCH D.O.G.S. is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive role model and to provide an extra set of hands to help us reach our goals of supporting each and every child.

Dads, grandads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers, even moms (we are inclusive of everyone)…this is your chance to have a night out alone with your student in a fun atmosphere at school.
